FROM HARDWARE LIMITATION
TO INTERNET CULTURE

Low poly wasn't a style. It was a budget. Consoles could only push so many triangles — so artists made the triangles count. Twenty-five years later, that constraint became the most beloved aesthetic on the internet.

1994–2000

PS1 ERA

~180K polygons / sec

No floating-point math. Vertices snapped to an integer grid, so models wobbled. Textures warped because there was no perspective correction. Fog hid the draw distance. Every "flaw" is now a signature.

  • Vertex jitter & texture warping
  • 256×224 output, heavy dithering
  • Flat shading, zero anti-aliasing
1996–2001

N64 ERA

Soft, blurry, warm

Real z-buffering and texture filtering — but a 4KB texture cache. So worlds went big, soft and colourful: rolling grass, chunky mountains, collectables everywhere. This is where the friendly low-poly island was born.

  • Bilinear filtering → dreamy blur
  • Collectathon worlds & hub islands
  • Vertex colours instead of textures
2015–NOW

POLYGON EVOLUTION

Constraint → choice

Hardware caught up. Nobody needed low poly any more — so it stopped being a limit and became a language. Indie devs, Blender kids and meme editors kept the triangles. The cat is what that language grew into.

  • Free tooling: Blender, Unity, Roblox
  • Renders in seconds → infinite remixes
  • Reads perfectly on a 6-inch phone

THE TRIANGLE BUDGET

A PS1 character was built from fewer triangles than a single modern eyelash. That scarcity forced artists to design shapes so simple a human brain could recognise them instantly — which is exactly why they still work as memes.

PS1 character ~300 tris
N64 character ~700 tris
Modern AAA character ~150,000 tris

More polygons never made anything more memorable.

THE CAT EVOLUTION

Ten years of internet history, one card at a time. Collect them all.

2015 Common

THE FIRST MODELS

Low-poly cat models start showing up on free asset sites and in student Blender reels. No owner, no brand — just a shape anyone could download and drop into a scene.

THE FLAT-HEAD FACE

Editors discover that stretching a photo texture across a five-triangle head produces a face that is somehow both cursed and adorable. The template locks in.

MAXWELL Rare

THE SPINNING CAT

A single looping 3D cat becomes a global reaction format. Proof that a low-poly cat needs no punchline, no language and no context to travel.

BRO THE CAT Epic

THE RELATABLE ERA

The cat stops being a shape and starts being a character. 3AM doomscrolling, gym failure, rent panic — it stands in for whoever is watching.

TIKTOK Legendary

THE EXPLOSION

One creator, one loop, 94.4M views. Then a thousand creators. The algorithm stops treating it as a video and starts treating it as a format.

Distribution #005

THE TICKER

The culture already existed. The community already existed. $POLY is simply the first place all of it gets to point at the same time.

THE ALGORITHM ALREADY VOTED FOR THIS CAT

A 252K-follower account. 14.9M lifetime likes. A pinned clip at 94.4M views and a back catalogue where the low-poly cat keeps landing again and again. This is not a campaign that has to be bought — it is attention that already exists, renewing itself every single day.

  • Zero paid reach. Every number above is organic distribution.
  • Repeatable, not lucky. Multiple uploads clear millions on the same format.
  • Global by default. Spanish captions, worldwide comments, no translation needed.

WHY THIS CAT
BECOMES A TICKER

The whole thesis, four words

CULTURE VIRALITY
COMMUNITY TICKER

Every stage has to exist before the next one is real. Most tokens start at the ticker and try to buy their way backwards. This one starts where culture already is.

01

CULTURE

The low-poly cat is not a design someone commissioned. It is the end point of twenty-five years of shared visual memory — PS1 wobble, N64 grass, the exact texture of being nine years old on a beige carpet. Nobody has to be taught what it means. The nostalgia was pre-installed, worldwide, decades ago.

02

VIRALITY

94.4M views. 8.1M likes. 2.3M shares. 994K saves. Not a marketing budget — a measured, repeatable result across creators, countries and languages. The cat clears the hardest test in crypto before it ever touches crypto: can it hold a stranger's attention for six seconds? It already does, millions of times a day.

03

COMMUNITY

Attention alone evaporates. What makes the cat different is that people make things with it — edits, remixes, new poses, new jokes, in every language, unprompted and unpaid. A meme that other people keep building is a meme with a community attached. That community is the actual asset; the token just gives it a front door and a scoreboard.

04

TICKER

The ticker is the last step, not the first. It is a coordination layer bolted onto something that was already working — a way for the people who have been sharing this cat for free to finally own a piece of the thing they built. $POLY doesn't ask you to believe in a roadmap. It asks you to recognise a cat you have already seen.

The short version

“Memecoins fail when they invent a culture. They work when they inherit one.”

Low poly is inherited. The cat is inherited. The nostalgia, the format, the audience, the creators — all of it existed and was compounding long before there was a contract address. $POLY is not trying to manufacture a moment. It is putting a ticker on one that has been running since 1999.

WHY IT WORKS

Four forces, all of them already switched on.

DECADES OF NOSTALGIA

Twenty-five years of muscle memory. The shape doesn't have to earn affection — it was loaded into people as children and never uninstalled.

INSTANTLY RECOGNISABLE

Five triangles and two eyes. It reads at thumbnail size, at 240p, on a cracked screen, at a glance. Simplicity is the distribution strategy.

LANGUAGE INDEPENDENT

No caption to translate, no joke to explain. A cat being sad is a cat being sad in every country on earth. The addressable market is everyone with eyes.

ORGANIC VIRALITY

Nobody was paid to post it. The format is free to copy, trivial to remix and rewarding to riff on — so it spreads whether anyone is funding it or not.
